Maximised the amenity of the sloped site created by fully terracing the site with a raised concrete frame to be over the neighbours’ hedges down the slope. This turned an enclosed, shaded garden into a suntrap party terrace with excellent views, pool, bar, large sliding doors into the house and large storage space below

The house is a modern architectural design featuring a fully glazed elevation, cantilevering balconies, canopies, glazed handrails, each presenting their own engineering challenges.

Designing for sway stability with an open elevation, hiding the structure in the sleek, minimal architecture.

Achieving cantilevers with inbuilt thermal breaks for modern thermal performance without cold bridges while also stepping the floors up and down to hide terrace steps, create level thresholds and design rainwater runoff.

Strapping down fixed canopies to resist the upsweeping wind the slope receives.

Designing for temporary stability of the building “inflating” during construction – strong winds sweeping up the slope and into the unglazed openings inflating the building and pushing the roof up and off!

This project was a refurbishment of a 1960’s house in poor condition.

BSC provided justification for partial demolition and reuse of what could be retained to meet the requirements of “Policy GD5 – Demolition and replacement of buildings”
